Nestled against the backdrop of the Witzenberg Mountain range is the quaint town of Tulbagh (established in 1699) offering bespoke accommodation and restored historic buildings since the earthquake in 1969. Like most small towns, a Church St exists at the heart of the town, which showcases the church, as well as other unique buildings steeped in history. Here the street is lined with trees and represents an example of an 18th- and 19th-century Cape Dutch village street. The Tulbagh Valley offers a truly South African experience.
Situated in a large National Monument is an educational, fun and informative gallery and shop. Maker’s Mark as it is known is located at No 42 Church Street. It is here that one can find an interesting selection of classic and sophisticated pottery and artwork for sale. The artwork is that of renowned South African and Australian artists – including some Aboriginal pieces. The gallery rotates it’s works every second month. When visiting this gorgeous little town of Tulbagh, Maker’s Mark certainly needs to be at the top of ones “MUST SEE??? list. This is where the love of good food, fine wine and the appreciation of art originates. This is merely a part of what Maker’s Mark offers.
It is no surprise that Tulbagh is known as the Valley of Abundance. With so much to offer, it is certainly a destination to taste the craft and culture of South Africa.
While at Maker’s Mark enjoy a brasserie, wine-and-oyster bar, and a gin-and-cigar lounge. There are various outdoor areas with magnificent tranquil gardens where one may enjoy the deli which offers local cheeses, bootlegger coffee and a unique designer store boasting South African crafts.
Known for their breakfasts, cheeseboards, mouth-watering mezze menu, salads and more, it is best to set a fair amount of time aside to engage in this little gem of a place and savour the multiple experiences on offer. End the day with a fine cup of coffee and a slice of heaven on a plate. The signature chocolate cake is a good enough reason on its own to visit this supreme destination.
